Rules

Fencing is a 1 vs 1 duel where the goal is to score 5/10/15 point in 3/6/9 minutes before your opponent. If the time runs out the fencer with the most points is declared the winner. The duel known as a bout takes place on a 2 meter wide and 17-18 meter long course known as the piste.

For épée fencing, both fencers can score a point by touching each other with the tip simultaneously. Subsequently, there is no “right of way”. The whole body is a valid target for scoring points.

The International Fencing Federation publishes detailed rules for the sport and all its disciplines.
